On a cold winter’s day in Eastend, Saskatchewan, the stark beauty of the land mirrors the raw honesty captured in the photographs of Wyoming pioneer photographer Lora Webb Nichols. Writer Dominika Prejdova, visiting from bustling Warsaw, Poland, spent time in Eastend as part of the Wallace Stegner House Residency Program, using the quiet landscape as inspiration for her book on Nichols.

Her time in Eastend offered more than solitude—it provided a deep sense of community, reflected in places like the Blue Dog Studio, where art and local connection come together. The residency, run by the Eastend Arts Council, continues the legacy of Wallace Stegner by offering artists and writers a space to engage with the landscape that shaped his life and work.

Much like Nichols’ photographic archive, the residency serves as a living document, preserving and inspiring stories rooted in place, history, and the enduring spirit of the prairie.
