This global event uses amateur radio to connect Scouts with peers across the world, sparking conversations that range from weather to daily life, all carried on the unpredictability of radio waves. Unlike a video call, these connections are raw and unfiltered, offering a unique sense of excitement with every voice that comes through. Hosted for over 20 years by licensed operator Ray Gowan, the event blends the thrill of radio communication with the serenity of nature, giving Scouts a chance to connect with others while also exploring the outdoors.
The weekend is packed with activities that challenge minds and build skills. Scouts take on a transmitter-hunting challenge, using triangulation techniques similar to those employed by rescuers, fostering teamwork and problem-solving. Beyond radio, they dive into survival skills—building fires, pitching tents, cooking meals, and learning first aid. Each moment, from playing in the creek to working together on tasks, reinforces self-reliance and camaraderie. As Scouts from over 149 countries participate in Jamboree on the Air, the event offers more than just technical learning—it’s a chance to explore the natural world, form lasting connections, and experience the limitless possibilities of adventure.
